Crispy Baked Tofu Strips

When I went primarily plant-based, one of the things I struggled with most was wrapping my head around how I would recreate my favourite meals without the animal-based protein option.

I often ate things like fajitas, sandwiches, stir-fry’s, etc., and this was a big concern for me!

I’d tried tofu a couple times before this, and to be honest, I wasn’t impressed. The texture was something that really turned me off and I struggled with it being an adequate replacement.

Being as open as I am to new foods however, I decided to give it another shot. Only this time I was going to ‘research’ my heart out to discover how I could make it taste better (if I could make it taste better).

Almost immediately, I realized the problem I was having was that I was previously using tofu that was too soft, which was resulting in a ‘crumbling’ texture that too-closely resembled scrambled eggs (something I also do not enjoy).

Upon this discovery, a whole new world of possibilities opened up for me and I began to really enjoy and look forward to incorporating tofu into my meals!

This recipe is one of the creations that came from that- and the best part about it is that it is so versatile. You can use these crispy tofu strips in anyway you’d like to replace the traditional animal protein in any meal and make it a yummy plant-based option instead.

Simply change up the spices you use to make something totally different.

This recipe is:

  •  Vegan
  • Gluten-free
  • High protein
  • Easy to make
  • Healthy

Below I’ve included a few spice combinations for you to try out.

Happy eating!

YIELDS
3-5 Servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 package extra firm tofu (organic or non-gmo)
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil
  • assorted spices

Fajita Style

  • garlic powder
  • lime juice
  • chili powder
  • pink Himalayan salt
  • parsley

Stir-fry Style

  • pink Himalayan salt
  • black pepper

‘BLT’ Style (for sandwiches)

  • pink Himalayan salt
  • liquid smoke
  • garlic powder

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1: Preheat oven to 400°F. Cover your cooking trays with oven-safe parchment paper.

STEP 2: Open and drain your tofu package, gently compressing the block to release any additional liquid. Pat the tofu block dry with paper towel. Slice the tofu block into long thin strips.

STEP 3: Gently toss the tofu strips with avocado oil, and lay them out evenly on your cooking trays in a single layer. Lightly sprinkle your chosen assorted spices evenly across all the tofu strips.

STEP 4: Cook for 30-45 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning half way through.

NOTES

  • Allow them to cool 5-10 minutes before mixing into your other ingredients (if applicable).
  • If you decide to broil for extra crispiness, watch closely as they can burn fast.

Brianne xx
